June 30, 2017 was a tumultuous day in a number of ways for me. It marked the sad day that YuiKaori (Yui Ogura + Kaori Ishihara) officially disbanded as a duo, the 7th anniversary of Love Live!’s beloved µ’s, the second anniversary of Aqours from the same project, and of course, the same day that four powerhouse Anisong idol groups from Japan came to Los Angeles, California for a 3-4 hour long performance at the Microsoft Theater.
Collaborating for the second year straight, Anime Expo and Anisong World Matsuri kicked off Anime Expo’s first ever preview night (Day 0) with an all start line up, including six member of The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls, two members of Walkure, Wake Up, Girls!, and Aqours.
Considering that a few of my recent posts have been focused on Anime Expo’s eye popping line up, we certainly should not forget about the number of other US anime and Japanese culture conventions that managed to snag some pretty big names this year.
With spring about half over and summer around the corner, we are about to enter full swing into convention season. While I won’t be attending some of these acts due to time, budget, and other personal reasons, hopefully those who are in the area will show up and support these artistes. Keep in mind that it’s still a fairly rare event for Anisong artistes to make a US appearance, let alone recurring appearances. It’s also uncommon for artistes to have meet & greet or autograph sessions in Japan, so this is certainly an opportunity you don’t want to miss if one or more of your favorite artistes are performing.
This year there will be two concerts: Japan Kawaii Live held on June 30th (Day 0) and Japan Super Live on July 1st (Day 1), each expected to be 4 hours in length. While the concert themes/titles were not formally revealed until after the announcements had started, which demolished my guesses, this made the line up potentially all the more exciting! Without further ado, here is the final lineup along with some thoughts after the jump.
